Safer Recruitment
Highbury has robust and transparent recruitment procedures in place to ensure children and young people are safeguarded. We work closely with Calderdale Safeguarding Children Partnership to ensure all recruitment follows its policies and procedures. Our safeguarding governor is also trained in safer recruitment and takes an active role on our selection panels. Before recruiting staff, we ensure:
- Our commitment to safeguarding is included in the Job Description and Person Specification
- Thorough checks are made of all applicants’ identity, work history and references, and any gaps in work history are investigated
- Proof of qualifications are obtained
- Teacher Status Checks are undertaken with the Teaching Regulation Agency
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are undertaken
- A suitable probationary period and supervision of the appointee is in place
- References are obtained and verified
- At least one member of staff trained in Safer Recruitment is on the selection panel
The school also maintains a Single Central Record of recruitment and vetting checks, which is a statutory requirement.
